CHRONICLE of a death foretold

2016 Oil on Italian Linen 120x120cm

Born with a hideous face and serpents for hair, Medusa was not destined for a benign and simple life. Especially as anyone looking at her was turned to stone. Invincible, you might imagine. And then along comes Perseus who avoided her direct gaze using a mirrored shield. And cut off her head, as you do.

In Australia there are more venomous snakes than anywhere else in the world. Which apparently makes them the perfect subject for a lolly; the magical combination sugar and totally artificial favours that is the Lolly Snake.

So an Aussie version of this fable might have the lolly Medusa inadvertently dying by her own hand. Biting itself it turns to stone.

The reward for being desirable. Or not.
