The best leaders inspire by example. However in many conflicts throughout history this has not been the case, with generations of lives dispatched into battle whilst the “leaders” led from the safety of the rear.

If these “leaders” viewed their citizens as sons, daughters, husbands, wives, parents or siblings, few might contemplate sending them to war. Only by obscuring humanity can such momentous decisions be considered conscionable.

Of course that was then and this is now. Now civilisation had developed enough to know that the cost of victory makes war futile.

And yet Trump became US President. So go figure.
